From Claude R. Marx of the Boston Globe:
The article is titled, Sox Fans will love Torre's tell-all
In the piece Claude states: "Owner George Steinbrenner may have bought championships for the Bronx Bombers during a period when the Red Sox were relegated to lovable runners-up ... Rodriguez was a symptom of a larger problem that the Yankees have faced since 2002. The owners replaced a team made up of scrappy, hard-working players who had a real esprit de corps with one populated by mercenaries, many of whom failed to live up to their potential ... the Yankees all too often went star shopping".
OK these comments and the other typical statement, "Yankees built from within during the championship years" are completely fabricated and misunderstood. You're trying to tell me the New York Yankees didn't have stars on those teams and they won everything built on pure grit? Wake up people, that is not the case, and let me also remind people that the years of 96-01 are over and have been over for a while! They are not coming back and we need to move on. 25 years from now will we still be saying, "oh I wish these players were like Scotty and Tino". Both of who were brought over from other teams not the Yankee organization. Can I also remind people that Tino was second in the league in HRs & RBIs during the 1997 campaign (44/141). That is not the so-called "gritty" player, those are all-star numbers, which Tino was in the 95 season before coming over to the Yankees!
Here's a list of players not from the Yankee organization that were part of those championship years. Many are arguably All-Stars, well above your average MLB player...
Paul O'Neil
Tino Martinez
Jeff Nelson
Scott Brosius - Look at his stats after the 98 Season. Replace him with A-Rod today and we miss the playoffs a lot more than 1 year!
ROGER CLEMENS
David Wells - I love David and all his problems, but didn't he walk off the mound in the 03 WS??
David Justice
Chile Davis
Cecil Fielder
Chuck Knoblauch
Darryl Strawberry
David Cone - Amazing
Mike Stanton
Orlando Hernandez - Free Agent who came over on a raft
Dwight Gooden
Jose Canseco
Jason Grimsley
Please understand I am not putting these teams down, just trying to point out that the Yankees bought and traded for players back than the same as they do today. MANY of these key players were indeed All-Star/MVP caliber players during their Yankee years or another point in their career. For whatever reason we were blessed with a modern day dynasty, something I will always get chills about. However that time is over, the AL east and American League as a whole has gotten better and caught up. Trust me A-Rod and this team of All-Stars will WIN! Please stop booing them on a regular basis and comparing them to those players of the past. You think that helps?
Side Note: The NY Yankees money is not your money, don’t complain how they spend it during these times. And for the family of 4 who complains they can no longer attend a game… it is not your god given right to attend anything, a baseball game is considered a LUXURY. Just because MLB has 81 home games, it doesn’t mean you need to attend 15 of them with your kids and sit right on top of the dugout. Parking $15, 4 bleacher seats at $14, get your kids 2 hot dogs and 2 sodas, $22. Total is roughly $100, I’m sure you and your wife can wait to eat after the game and you want to mention the beer? You’re bringing 7 year olds to the ballpark, LAY OFF THE BOOZE. Try taking your family to a football or basketball game and sitting close. Let me know how that one goes…
A true rip off = The Movies, go complain about that.
Ultimately the main reason why people complain about baseball prices? The history, it’s like apple pie and people will always cherish Americas Past Time. That is why I love baseball.
